Legends In Concert Behind the Scenes: Interview with Musical Director, Kenny Duncan

August 27th, 2009

Legends In Concert's Kenny DuncanPerseverance, accuracy, and attention to detail. All of these words aptly describe Kenny Duncan’s commitment to his craft. Kenny is the musical director & lead/rhythm guitarist for Legends In Concert in Myrtle Beach, SC. He has been wielding his axe since 1997 at our South Carolina location and leading the band since 2007.

We decided to take a moment to do a brief sit down with Kenny and gather a few memorable pieces of his Legends journey thus far….

How old where you when you first picked up a guitar? “10″

Who are your musical influences and a fan of?“Chet Atkins, Tony Rice, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Johnson, Ray Flack, and Jerry Reed.”

Who has been in the Surfside location band the longest beside you? and what is the best thing you like about his/her playing style?Randy Porshia. I really admire Randy’s versatility. His skill allows him to adapt so easily to a variety of musical styles.”

As a performer, what is the most embarrassing on-stage, live mishap you have witnessed?I was playing bass at an outdoor Bluegrass festival. The fiddle player had a little too much to drink and started swatting at a bird with his bow during one of our songs.”

What is your most favorite moment with Legends In Concert?Singing harmony with Whit Privette behind Jennifer Joseph as Linda Ronstadt.”

After all these years of performing live night in and night out for Legends, what remains as your favorite Legends’ artist song to perform live? Our Neil Diamond tribute’s version of The Christmas Song. I loved playing the sax solo on guitar!”

What is the oddest comment you have ever heard from a guest after a show? “Hey, are you Elvis?”

How much time, on average, does the band rehearse for an incoming act?2 days plus homework…Kenny laughs heartily after this answer. He says “sometimes it’s really tough to put a real number on the actual time it takes to prepare, it can vary from act to act.”

Which Legends normally have the most difficult musical charts for the band to rehearse or “gel” on?Barbra Streisand, Marilyn Monroe, Liberace, and I could probably name a few more…”

Aside from Legends In Concert, what is the most recent concert you have attended as a fan? “It was a multiple bill of 80’s bands back in 2006, I think? Firehouse, Ratt, Cinderella, & Quiet Riot.”

Last question, two words to describe your band? “Dedicated and meticulous!”

Dedicated and meticulous. Well put Kenny. Catch Kenny Duncan and the band live nightly at our Surfside Beach theater.

Ultimate Elvis Contest Wows for 2nd Straight year in Myrtle Beach

July 26th, 2009

Nathan Belt as ElvisFor the second straight year, Elvis fans were completely captivated with over one dozen tributes to the King of Rock-N-Roll at Legends In Concert in Surfside Beach, SC.

This 2009 version of the competition featured contestants from all over the United States. Elvis tributes came from as far west as Texas to bring their special brand of Elvis to the throng of Elvis-hungry fans.

The evening’s festivities were emceed by resident South Strand favorite, Steve Fairchild, who portrays Garth Brooks throughout the country at Legends In Concert venues. Steve opened the one night only engagement with an energized and Garth Brooks-ified version of  Elvis’ “That’s Alright Mama”, immediately drawing the crowd into an Elvis-filled evening. The evening also featured Kevin Mills, who made two special appearances throughout the evening bringing his Elvis magic to the crowd with impeccable versions of ”Polk Salad Annie” and “My Way”.

The competition opened with the return of last year’s Myrtle Beach contest winner, Michael Sokolik, Jr., who brought local fans to their feet with an energetic & youthful version of Elvis. From there, the night shined on with a dozen more Elvis acts who belted out spirited versions of all of Elvis’ hits from the rare ”Edge of Reality”, to the spiritual ”You Gave Me A Mountain”, and the ever-popular ”Suspicious Minds”.

When the dust settled at the end of round one, only Nathan Belt of Grapevine, Texas, Michael Sokolik, Jr., of Socastee, SC, and Vince King of Pearland, Texas were left standing as the final three. Each of the three then performed two more Elvis hits for the judges. Michael once again took the stage with non-stop movement ala Elvis’ early days and he was followed by Vince King, who provided the crowd with a well-balanced approach to the King of Rock; mixing both melodic vocals and a polished resemblance to Elvis. But the evening belonged to Nathan Belt, who performed third in the final round. Nathan opened his set with a breathtaking rendition of “Hurt” that kept the capacity crowd in awe and resulted in an extended standing ovation. Nathan’s vocals soared to peaks that, at times, seemed almost effortless on his part.  Tonight, Nathan had the complete package; Elvis swagger, towering vocals, and a charm only Elvis himself could exude.

The judges votes were in!  Nathan Belt  (pictured above) saddled in first place followed by fellow Texan, Vince King, who placed a close second. Michael Sokolik, Jr.  rounded out the top three finalists.

As the curtain fell on Myrtle Beach’s second annual Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Preliminary round, the entire ensemble of Elvis tributes treated the crowd to one final Elvis anthem, “Viva Las Vegas”.

Shortly after 11:30pm, all the “Elvi had the left building” , capping off the Fabulous Fifties Festival weekend which is certain to become an enduring tradition along the Grand Strand for years to come. Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Preliminary Contestants-Myrtle Beach
